Iain Duff re-elected to SIAM Board of Trustees

January 9, 2009

Iain Duff of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, CERFACS, and the University of Strathcylde has been re-elected by the membership of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to continue his service on the Board of Trustees through 2011. As member and current chair of the Board of Trustees, Duff's goals include continuing to foster collaboration with international organizations.

"My experience on the Council of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), with industry through CERFACS, on review boards for mathematics departments and supercomputing centers, and on the organizing committees of international meetings in Europe and the U.S. enables me to make important contributions to the Board discussions," Duff said.

Duff is a STFC Senior Fellow at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, England; the project leader for the Parallel Algorithms Group at CERFACS in Toulouse, France; and is a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. He is a life Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. He has been a member of SIAM for more than 25 years, and is a member of the London Mathematical Society, the Socit de Mathmatiques Appliques et Industrielles (SMAI, France), and the Sociedade Brasileira de Matemtica Aplicada e Computacional (SBMAC, Brazil). In addition, Duff is editor or associate editor of twelve journals in numerical analysis or scientific computation.

He is on the Council of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and is an IMA representative on the Board of ICIAM. Duff was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2006.

After completing his D. Phil. at Oxford, Duff was a Harkness Fellow in the United States, visiting SUNY Stony Brook and Stanford University. He then spent two years lecturing at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne before joining the Harwell Laboratory where he became Group Leader of Numerical Analysis in 1986. In 1990, the Group moved to the Atlas Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He has had several extended visits to Argonne National Laboratory, the Australian National University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Danish Technical University, Stanford University, and the University of Umea in Sweden.

Each year SIAM relies on its members to elect its leadership; representatives to the Council and Board of Trustees are elected to three-year terms. Those selected govern SIAM activities and make important decisions on behalf of all members.
