Nick Higham re-elected to SIAM Board of Trustees

January 9, 2009

The University of Manchester's Nick Higham has been re-elected by the membership of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to continue serving on the Board of Trustees through 2011. Higham's goals as a member of the board include cultivating and growing SIAM's international membership.

"SIAM is a global organization, with 31% of its membership residing outside the U.S.," said Higham. "Despite its healthy size, SIAM has the potential to grow, especially in parts of the world such as Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. SIAM must be pro-active in encouraging and facilitating growth."

He also notes SIAM's distinctive publications while acknowledging that progress is always essential. "The book and journal programs are unique and invaluable," he observes, "but ways must continually be sought to enhance them and to adapt them to changing models of publication."

Higham is the Richardson Professor of Applied Mathematics in the School of Mathematics at the University of Manchester. His B.Sc., M.S., and Ph.D. are all from the University of Manchester, and he has held visiting positions at Cornell University and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) at the University of Minnesota. He is director of research within the School of Mathematics, director of the Manchester Institute for Mathematical Sciences (MIMS), and head of the Numerical Analysis Group at the University of Manchester. Higham was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2007 and held a Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award from 2003 through 2008.

Higham is best known for his research on the accuracy and stability of numerical algorithms; the second edition of his 700-page monograph on this topic was published by SIAM in 2002. His most recent book, Functions of Matrices: Theory and Computation, is the first research monograph devoted to this topic, and was published by SIAM in 2008.

Each year SIAM relies on its members to elect its leadership; representatives to the Council and Board of Trustees are elected to three-year terms. Those selected govern SIAM activities and make important decisions on behalf of all members.
