"Marco Polo" game inspires robot detection

Engineers from Duke University and the University of New Mexico have used the simple pursuit-evasion game "Marco Polo" to solve a complex problem -- namely, how to create a system that allows robots to not only "sense" a moving target, but intercept it. The main challenge facing researchers is developing the artificial intelligence to control the robots and their sensors without direct human guidance. The research team consisted of Silvia Ferrari, Rafael Fierro, Brent Perteet, Chenghui Cai, and Kelli Baumgartner. Their article, A Geometric Optimization Approach to Detecting and Intercepting Dynamic Targets Using a Mobile Sensor Network, which published the results from their latest experiments, can be found in the February 2009 issue of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, a special issue on control and optimization in cooperative networks.
