DOE Office of Science Announces Graduate Fellowship Program

On September 30, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced the Office of Science Graduate Fellowship Program to support graduate students working towards a Ph.D. in the fields that address scientific challenges relevant to the Office of Science's mission. Example areas include basic research in physics, chemistry, non-medical biology, mathematics, computational sciences, engineering, computer science, and environmental sciences. Fellowship recipients must be U.S. citizens and full-time students. The awardees will receive up to $50,500 per year for three years for living expenses, tuition, and materials and travel related to their research. Applications are due November 30, and awardees will be notified in the middle of March. Initial support for this program, $12.5 million of the DOE funds provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will allow DOE to award at least 80 fellowships in this first competition, and additional awards may be made from the same applicant group if further funding from FY 2010 DOE appropriations is available.
