Paul Samuelson 1915-2009

Economist Paul Samuelson's passing was noted in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and other major news publications. The winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, who passed away on December 13, 2009, was known for his many contributions to economics that brought mathematical rigor and analysis to the discipline.

Paul Samuelson had also been a John von Neumann Lecturer, speaking at the SIAM Annual Meeting in 1971. This lecture resulted in an article in SIAM Review in the January 1973 issue, titled "Mathematics of Speculative Price." This article also featured an appendix by Robert Merton which provided a mathematical appendix deducing Black-Scholes warrant-pricing functions dependent only on the certain interest rate and the common stock's relative variance.
