Paul R Garabedian (August 2nd, 1927 - May 13th, 2010)

May 19, 2010

Paul Garabedian, Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Division of Computational Fluid Dynamics of the Courant Institute, New York University, died on March 13, 2010.

Garabedian received his PhD in mathematics at Harvard University under the direction of Lars Ahlfors for work on Szeg kernel functions and Robinson's conjecture. He worked in diverse areas of mathematics and its applications, including the Bieberbach conjecture in complex analysis and transonic flow in fluid dynamics.

Garabedian was the winner of th 1983 Birkhoff Prize and the 1989 von Karman Prize. He was elected to the initial class of SIAM Fellows for his contributions to partial differential equations and fluid dynamics. An interview with Paul Garabedian, conducted by Phil Davis, can be found on the SIAM history site at http://history.siam.org/oralhistories/garabedian.htm.
