M3 Challenge Champions paper to be published in SIURO

May 27, 2010

After emerging as champions of Moody's Mega Math (M3) Challenge last month, the team from Montgomery Blair High School has another feather in its cap. Their paper from the Internet-based high-school math-modeling competition has been accepted for publication in SIAM Undergraduate Research Online (SIURO). Andrew Das Sarma, Jacob Hurwitz, David Tolnay, Scott Yu, and their coach, David Stein, won the top prize at the M3 Challenge for proposing recommendations to improve the U.S. Census Bureau's population estimates, specifically with regard to undercount adjustment, drawing Congressional districts and apportioning the U.S. House of Representatives. SIURO is a Web-based publication targeted toward outstanding research in applied and computational mathematics at the undergraduate level. This is the second time that an M3 Challenge paper has been accepted for appearance in a peer-reviewed college-level publication. The winning paper from the 2008 M3 Challenge, on the topic of energy independence and the unintended consequences of the use of ethanol, was published in The Mathematical Association of America's College Mathematics Journal (Vol. 40, No. 1, January 2009).
