Professor Martin Grtschel receives the SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession

August 16, 2010

The SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession was established in 1985 to acknowledge individuals who have made distinguished contributions toward the advancement of applied mathematics. The prize is in the form of a certificate presented at the 2010 SIAM Annual Meeting. Originally awarded every few years, it became an annual award in 2003.

Professor Martin Grtschel was awarded the prize this year at the Prizes and Awards Luncheon at SIAM's Annual Meeting, held July 12-16, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Grtschel has a profound interest in the application of mathematics, emphasized by his over twenty collaborations with the industrial sector -- in areas as varied as telecommunications, software, logistics, and transportation. He is Vice President of the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) and Professor at Technische Universitt Berlin. Grtschel has formerly served as the president of the German Mathematical Society, as lead organizer of the 1998 International Congress of Mathematicians, and is currently Secretary of the International Mathematical Union.

Amidst his string of accomplishments, perhaps the most notable is his founding of the Berlin institute MATHEON, which since its inception in 2002, has grown to new and impressive heights. As its director for seven years, Grtschel has not only enhanced mathematics research through the institute's activities, but has also steered it toward the development of effective methods for education and outreach. A SIAM Fellow, Grtschel served on several prize committees including SIAM's Dantzig, Wiener, and Kleinman prizes, and The John von Neumann Lecture.
