DHS Funds Discrete Math and its Applications

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced recently the creation of four university-based research centers in discrete mathematics. These centers will collaborate with the Institute for Discrete Sciences (IDS) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. IDS involves DHS and several national laboratories.
DIMACS (Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science) at Rutgers University is the lead center. It will coordinate the efforts of the centers at the University of Southern California, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Pittsburgh. The DIMACS center includes partner researchers from other universities and industry.
Recognizing the increasingly important role of discrete mathematics to applications, the DHS centers will conduct research that can address problems in areas like information analysis, decision support, risk analysis, and bioinformatics.
