Open Access

When a manuscript is accepted for publication, SIAM journal authors can opt to pay a one-time fee of $2500.  The payment of this Article Processing Charge (APC) places the full published version of the article in Open Access, freely available to all. This option is voluntary and is solely up to the author, who may have funding available to put to this use. Otherwise, the full version of the paper is available only to journal subscribers.

Authors who pay the APC fee must select the Open Access option through item 6 on the Consent to Publish form, which the Corresponding Author completes at manuscript submission. Doing so licenses SIAM to publish the work under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY) License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). This license allows authors and others to copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work, provided that proper credit is given.

SIAM Journals and the RCUK Policy on Access to Research Outputs

The Research Councils UK has recently released a policy on Open Access that continues to support a mixed approach. This policy relates to articles published in peer-reviewed academic journals or conference proceedings. Peer-reviewed research papers which result from research that is wholly or partially funded by the Research Councils must be published in journals that are compliant with this policy.

The Research Councils recognize that a scholarly research paper can be made Open Access by the following methods:

  1. Publishing the paper in a publisher’s Open Access journal, or
  2. Making the version of the paper as accepted for publication, including all changes resulting from peer review but not necessarily incorporating the publisher’s formatting or layout, archived and made accessible in an online repository – other than one run by the publisher.

SIAM now offers a voluntary option that, after payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC), places the article in Open Access. SIAM also allows authors to post their article - which we provide - on their personal website, their institution’s website, and/or an online repository. We have revised our author agreement so our policy reflects our longstanding practice. While not necessary, if authors who have signed our copyright agreement in the past and would like a new agreement, please contact Kivmars Bowling ([email protected]) and we will send you the revised agreement for your signature. Or you may simply go ahead and post your article, knowing that you are allowed to do so.

Authors who reside in the UK may therefore continue to submit articles to SIAM journals. Once authors post the same article to an online repository, they will be in full compliance with the RCUK’s policy.
