Engine Design Optimization using CFD

Detailed numerical models are being used in the engine design process to describe multi-phase engine flows with turbulence, heat transfer, liquid fuel atomization, evaporation, combustion, and emissions production in realistic engine geometries. Consideration of real fuel chemistry is important in new low temperature, low emissions combustion regimes due to the controlling influence of the auto-ignition process. Advanced CFD codes are being developed at the Engine Research Center that combine detailed chemistry and flame-propagation models, and can describe diesel, spark-ignition, knocking, dual-fuel and HCCI engine combustion. New fuel injection and combustion strategies are being explored using CFD combined with Genetic Algorithm optimization. A two-stage combustion concept is described that shows great potential to meet future ultra-low emission standards.
