Program in Mathematics of Knowledge and Search Engines

December 1, 2006

September 10December 14, 2007
Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, UCLA

Organizing Committee: Ronald Coifman, Yuval Kluger, Yann LeCun, Vladimir Rokhlin, and Karin Verspoor.

This long program will involve a community of senior and junior researchers. The intent is for participants to have an opportunity to learn about the mathematics of knowledge and search engines from the perspective of multiple fields---notably, mathematic and computer science---and to meet a diverse group of people and have an opportunity to form new collaborations. There will be an active program of research activities, seminars, and workshops throughout the period. Core participants will be in continuous residence at IPAM for these 14 weeks. The program will open with tutorials and will be punctuated by four major workshops and a culminating workshop at UCLA's Lake Arrowhead Conference Center. Between the workshops there will be a program of activities involving long-term and short-term participants, as well as visitors.

Schedule: Tutorials. September 1120, 2007.
Workshop I: Dynamic Searches and Knowledge Building. October 15, 2007.
Workshop II: Numerical Tools and Fast Algorithms for Massive Data Mining, Search Engines and Applications. October 2226, 2007.
Workshop III: Social Data Mining and Knowledge Building. November 59, 2007.
Workshop IV: Search Algorithms for Biological Datasets. November 2630, 2007.
Culminating Workshop at Lake Arrowhead: December 914, 2007.

Full and partial support for long-term participants is available. (Support for individual workshops will also be available; participants should see the workshop's Web page for more information.) IPAM is especially interested in applicants who are interested in becoming core participants and participating in the entire program (September 10December 14, 2007), but will consider applications for shorter periods. Funding for participants is available at all academic levels, although recent PhDs, graduate students, and re-searchers in the early stages of their career are especially encouraged to apply.

Encouraging the careers of women and minority mathematicians and scientists is an important component of IPAM's mission and it welcomes their applications.
