SIAM Student Chapters Proliferate Worldwide

October 21, 2006

Scattered around the globe are nearly fifty student chapters of SIAM. The chapters give students, graduate and undergraduate, opportunities to explore and build their interests in applied mathematics and computing.

SIAM chapters are growing not only in number, but also in activity. Many student chapters invite researchers, often from industry, to speak to their groups. Some chapters hold student conferences; an upcoming example is the SIAM southeast regional student conference (http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~cmagnan/conference.html), which will be held at Emory University, December 2 and 3. As the sponsors, the student chapters at Auburn University, Clemson University, Emory University, and the University of South Carolina have dubbed the conference ACES. The members of the organizing committee are Colton Magnant and Ken Keating of Emory and Alexander Engau of Clemson; supporting the students' efforts have been faculty at Emory and Clemson, including A.J. Meir, Sue Brenner, and Chris Cox.

Most SIAM student chapters have their primary homes in mathematics or applied mathematics departments, but membership in a chapter is open to any student at the university with an interest in applied mathematics or computing. For information about starting a student chapter, see http://www.siam.org/students/chapters/start.php.
