SIAM's International Reach

Vacationing in Italy with his family this spring, SIAM technical director Bill Kolata didn't manage to leave work completely behind. The Smart Car, ubiquitous on the streets of Europe, could have had him thinking about algorithms, but the model shown here, parked in Florence just on the Palazzo Pitti side of the Ponte Vecchio, caught his attention for a more obvious reason. If the association isn't entirely pleasant, "at least it has SIAM as Number 1," Kolata says. His son, Stefan Kolata, took the picture.
