ICIAM Pioneer Prize

Heinz Engl (left) of Johannes Kepler Universit�t Linz and the Austrian Academy of Sciences was a recipient of the joint Pioneer Prize awarded at ICIAM �07. Shown here with ICIAM president Ian Sloan, Engl was honored for his work on inverse problems, especially in the solution of a wide range of industrial problems. (As mentioned in "Financial Mathematics at ICIAM," he discussed inverse methods for parameter estimation in a finance session in Zurich.) Other pioneering activities for which he was commended include his promotion of mathematics in industrial problem solving worldwide and the founding of RICAM (the Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics, which is sponsored by the Austrian Academy of Sciences). "Professor Engl's vigorous activity," the prize committee wrote, "enables and promises many exciting new opportunities for applied mathematics and industrial problem solving."
