AWM Workshop to be Held at SIAM Annual Meeting in Toronto

January 1, 1998

The Association for Women in Mathematics will hold a workshop for women graduate students and recent PhDs in the mathematical sciences in July at the University of Toronto, in conjunction with the 1998 SIAM Annual Meeting (July 13-17, 1998) and the 9th SIAM Conference on Discrete Mathematics (July 12-15, 1998). Pending final budgetary approval, the workshop will be supported by the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, and AWM.

The workshop, which is scheduled for July 13 and 14, will consist of a poster session, with presentations by selected graduate students, and four minisymposia, with talks by selected postdocs. An introductory group discussion and dinner will be held on July 12.

For the poster session, graduate students can propose to address any area of research in applied mathematics. The first minisymposium will include four career-oriented talks; the three remaining minisymposia will focus on the research areas of mathematical biology, discrete mathematics/optimization, and PDEs and applications.

AWM will offer funding for travel and other expenses for up to 20 participants. All mathematicians (female and male) are invited to attend the entire program.

To be eligible for funding, graduate students must have begun work on a thesis problem. Applications from graduate students should include a cover letter, a summary of the student's work, the title of the proposed poster, a curriculum vitae, and a supporting letter of recommendation from a faculty member or research mathematician.

Applications from postdocs (who should have received their PhDs within the past five years) should include a cover letter; a title and abstract (75 words or less) of the proposed talk for one of the research minisymposia; a one- to two-page summary of their work; and a curriculum vitae. Applications can also include a letter of recommendation; letters of support are encouraged.

All applicants who are not U.S. citizens must have a current U.S. address. AWM is also seeking volunteers to lead discussion groups and to act as mentors for workshop participants.

Applicants should send five complete copies of the application materials (including the cover letter) via postal mail to: Workshop Selection Committee, Association for Women in Mathematics, 4114 Computer & Space Sciences Building, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742-2461. The application deadline for participation in the workshop is March 1, 1998.

For more information on topics, eligibility, and funding, or for anyone interested in volunteering as a discussion group leader, contact the AWM office at (301) 405-7892 or [email protected].
