CBMS Announces 1998 Conferences, Requests Proposals for 1999

The Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, pending funding from the National Science Foundation, expects to sponsor four regional research conferences in 1998, bringing the total number of conferences in the 30-year history of the series to 267.
Topics, lecturers, dates, and locations for the 1998 NSF-CBMS conferences include:
"Wavelet Analysis as a Tool for Computational and Harmonic Analysis," Ronald Coifman, May 4-8, University of Central Florida, Orlando;
"Blocks of Finite Reductive Groups, Deligne-Lustig Varieties, and Complex Reflections Groups," Michel Brou�, May 25-29, University of North Texas, Denton;
"Lectures on Division Algebra," David J. Saltman, June 14-18, Colorado State University, Fort Collins; and
"Ergodic Theory, Groups, and Geometry," Robert J. Zimmer, June 22-26, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
Each speaker will deliver ten lectures on the assigned topic and then prepare an expository monograph based on the lectures. The monographs are normally published after the conference as part of a regional conference series; depending on the conference topic, the monographs will be published by the American Mathematical Society, SIAM, or jointly by the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
CBMS is also requesting new proposals for its 1999 conference series. The deadline for these proposals is April 6, 1998.
