A SIAM Annual Meeting Program Takes Shape

June 22, 2010

If you're reading this issue of SIAM News in Pittsburgh, between sessions at the 2010 SIAM Annual Meeting, you're a direct beneficiary of the efforts of Bill Kolata and Linda Thiel. Shown here at SIAM headquarters in late February, Kolata (SIAM's technical director) and Thiel (director of programs and services) were grouping approximately 175 contributed papers into thematically related sessions, prior to scheduling a total of about 150 minisymposium and contributed sessions. After accommodating a variety of constraints, they were guided mainly by the hope of keeping conference-goers happy and fulfilled, with one and only one session in an individual's interest area scheduled at any time. For the future, software that could handle at least part of the job has increasing appeal.

Outside the purview of Kolata and Thiel are the many special sessions on the program. In addition to such obvious highlights as the von Neumann lecture ("From Linear to Nonlinear," by Bernd Sturmfels), the Reid Prize lecture (by John Burns), and presentations by the SIAM MCM winners are what promises to be an outstanding I.E. Block Community Lecture ("The Geometry of Music," by Dmitri Tymoczko) and, for something completely different, a panel discussion, Ethics and Integrity in SIAM Publishing (with panelists Doug Arnold, Susanne Brenner, chair Tim Kelley, and David Marshall).

Students will find a wealth of activities---probably more than one during many time slots!---but are encouraged to find time to meet Sue Minkoff (see Life After Graduate School: What's Next?). Photo by Lois Sellers.
