Accolades for an Accomplished Community

October 26, 2004

Commenting on the extremely high quality of the presentations, SIAM president Mac Hyman congratulated Student Paper Prize recipients Martin Kleinsteuber of the University of Wrzburg (left) and Alfonso Bueno Orovio of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (center). (Not pictured is the third recipient, Silas D. Alben of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University.) Looking to the future, Kleinsteuber pointed out that by integrating students more fully into regular meeting programs, SIAM would give larger audiences the opportunity to hear about the prize-winning work of their up-and-coming colleagues.

Standouts in a set of lively student chapters are the SIAM Gators, of the University of Florida, shown here with a few of their faculty supporters at the student conference they organized last spring. Enthusiasm undiminished, two of their members described their experience as organizers, along with the successful outcome, at a breakfast meeting for student chapters during the SIAM Annual Meeting in Portland.

Joyce McLaughlin of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (right) gave the second annual AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture in Portland. Presenting the award certificate was AWM president-elect Barbara Keyfitz, who began a term on July 1 as director of the Fields Institute, in Toronto. Divulging a lifelong admiration for Kovalevsky, and even a connection with one aspect of her work, McLaughlin devoted her lecture to some of her very recent work in transient elastography, one of several research projects under way at Rensselaer's new Inverse Problems center; McLaughlin is the center's director.

Marking its 20th year, the Mathematical Contest in Modeling drew large numbers of three-student teams and instituted a new prize, in honor of MCM founder Ben Fusaro. Shown here with SIAM president Mac Hyman are the members of the two winning SIAM teams: From left, Alejandro Cantarero, Corry Lee, and Moorea Brega of the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Eric Hartley, Eric Malm, and Steven Avery of Harvey Mudd College.
