Student Paper Prizes Awarded in Montreal

September 29, 2003

Students who attended the SIAM/CAIMS meeting in Montreal had an abundance of good talks to choose from, perhaps none more meaningful to them than those given by their peers. Among the most impressive of the student speakers were the recipients of this year's SIAM Student Paper Prize: Michiel Hochstenbach (left) of Utrecht University, whose winning paper is titled "Harmonic and Refined Extraction Methods for the Singular Value Problem with Applications in Least Squares Problems," and Melvin Leok of the California Institute of Technology (middle), honored for his paper "Foundations of Computational Geometric Mechanics." Hochstenbach and Leok are shown with SIAM president Mac Hyman at the prize luncheon; not pictured is the third recipient, Chek Beng Chua of Cornell University, honored for his paper "A Primal-Dual Second-Order Cone Approximations Algorithm for Symmetric Cone Programming."

As is frequently the case, this year's hard-working prize committee-Bill Briggs (chair), Jrgen Gerlach, Clyde Monma, and M. Zuhair Nashed---also awarded a few honorable mentions: to Anil Hirani of Caltech ("Discrete Exterior Calculus: Theory and Applications") and Ruben Juanes of the University of California, Berkeley ("Stabilized Numerical Solutions of Three-Phase Porous Media Flow Using a Multiscale Finite Element Formulation").
