News from Sydney as ICIAM 2003 Takes Shape

March 3, 2002

The ICIAM 2003 organizers expect to make registration information available by the end of this month. Full details about the congress (July 7-11, in Sydney), including registration fees, accommodations, and social events, will be provided. Registration is to be mainly electronic.

Fees have not yet been finalized, says congress director Noel Barton, who, along with "a deep discount to students," promises "an Early Bird fee that will meet our long-standing commitment to the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics" to keep costs as low as possible.

Barton reminds the community that they can participate in the congress in three ways: as organizers or speakers in minisymposia, in contributed talks, and in poster presentations. Deadlines for submissions in all categories will be posted at www.iciam.org. On-line submission/acceptance of abstracts will begin in early April 2002.

To strengthen the program and arrangements for ICIAM 2003, the organizers have arranged to embed within it several other meetings: (1) Australian-New Zealand Mathematics Convention (incorporating the winter meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society and the New Zealand Mathematics Colloquium); (2) 2003 Computational Techniques and Applications Conference; (3) 17th National Congress of the Australian Society for Operations Research; (4) 2nd National Symposium on Financial Mathematics; and (5) 5th Biennial Engineering Mathematics and Applications Conference. Details can be found at www.iciam.org.

A survey conducted by the organizers after ICIAM 99 has led them "to keep a tight rein on expenses and generally offer social events as an option at delegate expense." Accordingly, Barton writes, the program will not be lavish, featuring a modest reception and what he hopes will be a "Down Under" experience for all. Options that will be available include a night at the Sydney Opera House and a harbour cruise.

Looking forward to "a memorable and successful international conference," Barton reminds readers to observe deadlines for submission of abstracts and, in order to save on airfares and registration fees, to make their arrangements early.
