Colwell Joins Math Community in Honoring Tondeur

June 3, 2002

National Science Foundation director Rita Colwell, who is scheduled to give the keynote address at the SIAM 50th Anniversary Meeting, recently made time for another special event: a May 15 reception at the National Academy of Sciences, held to honor Philippe Tondeur as he nears the end of his term as director of NSF's Division of Mathematical Sciences. Commenting on what by almost any measure have been three spectacular years for the mathematical sciences, Colwell described Tondeur as "persistent, committed, visionary, . . . , delightful." He worked tirelessly to make clear the effectiveness of mathematics in all the sciences, she said; obviously among the persuaded herself, she offered her listeners a new take on the standing of their discipline. "The mathematical sciences" she said, "are the esperanto of the sciences and engineering." An interview with Tondeur will appear in the July/August issue of SIAM News.
