National Academies Elect New Members

The U.S. National Academies of Sciences and Engineering have announced the names of the members and foreign associates elected in 2002. New members of interest to the SIAM community are listed below.

National Academy of Sciences
Zdenek P. Bazant, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering and Materials Science, Northwestern University.
Manuel Blum, professor of computer science, Carnegie Mellon University.
John L. Hennessy, president, Stanford University.
David W. McLaughlin, professor of mathematics and provost, New York University (see "NYU Looks to Courant Institute in Search for New Provost").
Peter Sarnak, professor of mathematics, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University.
Peter Shor, member and fellow, AT&T Laboratories Research.
Yum-Tong Siu, William Elwood Byerly Professor of Mathematics, Harvard University.
Foreign associate (from Belgium): David P. Ruelle, professor, Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, Bures-sur-Yvette, France.

National Academy of Engineering
Klavs F. Jensen, Lammot du Pont Professor of Chemical Engineering and professor of materials science and engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
A. Stephen Morse, professor of electrical engineering, Yale University.
William A. Sirignano, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, University of California, Irvine.
Warren Washington, senior scientist and head, climate change research section, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder. (Washington was also recently elected chair of the National Science Board.)

Election to the National Academy of Sciences recognizes distinguished achievements in original research. Membership in the National Academy of Engineering honors those who have made "important contributions to engineering theory and practice" and those who have demonstrated "unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology."
