Philadelphia, March 1952: SIAM held its first meeting, with a program featuring a talk on mathematics in physics by William F.G. Swann of the Franklin Institute. The meeting was held in the Picture Gallery of the Main Building of what is now Drexel University (top floor of the building shown above in photos (a) and (b). Drexel president James Crease welcomed the audience (and was later helpful in providing office space at Drexel for the new organization). At one point, SIAM was headquartered in the Drexel-owned Abbotts Dairy building (shown above in photo (c), shortly before its demolition).

Philadelphia, July 2002: Martin Golubitsky and Margaret Wright, chairs of the program committee for SIAM's 50th anniversary meeting, are putting together an exciting program. Mix cutting-edge applied mathematics and computation with a visit to some SIAM landmarks---mark your calendars now! With plans for SIAM's 50th Anniversary Meeting (July 2002, Philadelphia) moving forward, SIAM founder and long-time managing director I.E. Block took to the streets with his camera, capturing a few images from SIAM's history.
