A Fitting Tribute to a Fine Scientist

An international conference on applied mathematics, dedicated to the memory of Ralph E. Kleinman, who died last February, was held at the University of Delaware, November 6-8, 1998. The theme of the conference reflected Kleinman's interest in problems of wave propagation arising in various physical contexts. Kleinman was the author of many significant papers in this area and, a few days before his death, had completed a book with George Dassios on low-frequency scattering.

The scientific program of the conference consisted of 16 invited lectures. Of these distinguished speakers, ten came from abroad and six from the U.S. Many of the presentations referred not only to Kleinman's scientific contributions, but also---via anecdotes---to his warmth, wit, and vitality. The conference, whose proceedings will be published, was a fitting tribute to a fine scientist and compassionate world citizen.
