Cleve Moler Tops List of New SIAM Officers for 2006-08

At last summer's annual meeting in New Orleans, SIAM president Martin Golubitsky had the pleasure of presenting the Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession to Cleve Moler. In fall voting, the SIAM membership would chose Moler---whose prize-worthy contributions include the development and wide distribution of LINPACK, EISPACK, and MATLAB---to succeed Golubitsky. On January 1, Golubitsky began the second year of his two-year term as SIAM president; Moler spends the year as SIAM president-elect.
In last fall's voting, SIAM members elected the following officers and members of the Board of Trustees and Council to terms that began January 1:

At its most recent meeting, held in Philadelphia, December 9 and 10, the board elected Iain Duff to a one-year term as chair. The group also appointed Juan Meza to a three-year term as a member of the board. (Duff joined all elected and appointed SIAM officers as an ex officio member of the SIAM Council on January 1.)
Juan Meza, head of research in high-performance computing at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has been appointed to a term on the Board of Trustees, beginning on the first of the year. Shown here in July at Diversity Day 2005, Meza has been actively involved in the event each year, sometimes as an organizer, always on hand with encouragement and good ideas for increasing the effectiveness of the day.
A member of the Board of Trustees since 2003, Iain Duff of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory was re-elected this fall and almost immediately elected by the group as its chair for 2006.
Continuing terms on the SIAM Council are Douglas Arnold (Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, University of Minnesota); vice president for education William Briggs (University of Colorado, Denver; ex officio); Lisa Fauci (Tulane University); Anne Greenbaum (University of Washington); Martin Golubitsky and Sam Gubins (ex officio); Michael Heath (University of Illinois at Urbana�Champaign); vice president for programs Ilse C.F. Ipsen (North Carolina State University; ex officio); vice president for industry Kirk Jordan (IBM Systems and Technology; ex officio); C.T. (Tim) Kelley (NC State); Randall LeVeque (Washington); Mary Pugh (University of Toronto); and Henk van der Vorst (Utrecht University).
Martin Golubitsky (University of Houston), now in his second year as SIAM president, appointed Tim Kelley as vice president for publications. Continuing appointed vice presidents are William Briggs (education), Ilse Ipsen (programs), and Kirk Jordan (industry).
As SIAM executive director James Crowley points out, the newly elected officers follow in the footsteps of an impressive group of outgoing officers. Thanks are due to all of them and also to everyone who ran for office.
