A Momentous Event in Linear Algebra

January 14, 2006

What do ill-posed problems from image restoration, reduced-order models for the simulation of dynamical systems, models of biological processes, and cluster detection in data mining have in common? All can be computed faster, more efficiently, and more accurately with the help of linear algebra!

These and many other application-oriented problems are among the topics on the program of the first joint GAMMSIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra, Dsseldorf, Germany, July 2427, 2006. GAMM is the society of German-speaking countries for applied mathematics and mechanics, one of the first societies to enter into a reciprocity agreement with SIAM. SIAM's and GAMM's very active special-interest groups on linear algebra are organizing the Dsseldorf conference as a continuation of SIAM's successful series of conferences on applied linear algebra. This is the premier international conference in linear algebra, with organizing committee members and plenary speakers from 11 different countries.

The conference will take place on the campus of the HeinrichHeine
Universitt Dsseldorf. Dsseldorf is easy to reach by train or plane, and the university is connected to an efficient high-frequency public transportation system. Dsseldorf is well known for its elegant shopping boulevard, the Knigsallee; and its old quarter, the Altstadt, whose micro breweries and pubs form the longest bar in the world.---Andreas Frommer, Bergische Universitt Wuppertal (co-organizer of the conference, with Bruno Lang, Wuppertal, and Marlis Hochbruck, HeinrichHeineUniversitt Dsseldorf), and Ilse Ipsen, SIAM vice president for programs and a member of the conference program committee.
