SIAM Chapters in the Southeast US collaborate in 2008 ACES Workshop

March 26, 2008

Piotr Wendykier from Emory University presents his paper at the 2008 ACES Workshop at Clemson University.

The 2nd annual ACES Workshop, a SIAM southeast regional student conference, was hosted by Clemson University on January 26th. ACES continued aim is for the presentation and collaboration of individual student research between the SIAM chapters of Auburn University, Clemson University, Emory University, and the University of South Carolina. This year's workshop was organized by Thomas Fisher, Jonathan Woody and Timur Milgrom of Clemson with support from Colton Magnant of Emory, all doctoral students in the Mathematical Sciences. The workshop was funded by the SIAM chapter of Clemson University and the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson.

The workshop was attended by approximately twenty-five students and faculty representing the aforementioned universities as well as participants from East Tennessee State University and Wake Forest. A total of ten thirty-minute talks were given at the one-day event in the areas of statistics, computational mathematics, biomathematics, combinatorics, algebra and graph theory.

After the talks, a social activity was held to help build relationships for future collaboration. Dinner and Bluegrass were enjoyed at the famous Just More Barbecue in neighboring Pendleton, South Carolina.

Excitement is building as next years workshop will return to Atlanta's Emory University. The organizing universities would like to extend an invitation to other institutions and SIAM chapters in the southeast to join our effort for the enrichment in research and professional relationships. Those interested, are encouraged to contact SIAM representatives from Clemson or Emory.
