Editorial Policy

The SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization publishes original research articles on the mathematics and applications of control theory and certain parts of optimization theory. Papers considered for publication must be significant at both the mathematical level and the level of applications or potential applications. Papers containing mostly routine mathematics or those with no discernible connection to control theory or optimization will not be considered for publication. From time to time, the journal will also publish authoritative surveys of important subject areas in control theory and optimization whose level of maturity permits a clear and unified exposition.

The broad areas mentioned above are intended to encompass a wide range of mathematical techniques and scientific, engineering, economic, and industrial applications. These include stochastic and deterministic methods in control, estimation, and identification of systems; modeling and realization of complex control systems; the numerical analysis and related computational methodology of control processes and allied issues; and the development of mathematical theories and techniques that give new insights into old problems or provide the basis for further progress in control theory and optimization. Within the field of optimization, the journal specializes in those parts of the theory concerned with the dynamics of deterministic or stochastic systems in continuous or discrete time or otherwise dealing with differential equations, dynamics, infinite-dimensional spaces, or fundamental issues in variational analysis and geometry. Contributions to numerical methodology are also welcome in accordance with these aims, especially as related to large-scale problems and decomposition as well as to fundamental questions of convergence and approximation.

Due to space limitations, papers will generally be limited to 20 journal pages. This limit may be exceeded; however, deviation from the page limit will require that the author justify the added length and that the referees and editors be convinced that a longer paper is necessary. Long papers that are split into multiple parts may, at the discretion of the editorial board, be treated as a single submission and justification of the overall length of the combined manuscripts may be required.

Submission of a manuscript to a SIAM journal is representation by the author that the manuscript has not been published or submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Papers that have appeared in conference proceedings, or that have appeared elsewhere only in abbreviated form, may be considered for publication if significantly revised. If a paper has appeared previously, in any form, authors must clearly indicate this in both their cover letter and a footnote on the first page of the paper.

Submissions: The SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization accepts manuscript submissions electronically in PDF format. For information and instructions see https://www.siam.org/journals/sicon/authors.php or e-mail [email protected].. To submit your paper go to https://sicon.siam.org.
