Announcements
A mobile app for the 2015 SIAM Conference on Mathematical & Computational Issues in the Geosciences (GS15) is available for download. Plug www.tripbuildermedia.com/apps/siam2015events into your mobile browser. The link will automatically detect the type of device and take you to the right place to download the app. Or, view the mobile site in HTML5 by connecting to http://www.tripbuilder.net/mw/apps/siam2015events. Once you select GS15 from the list of 2015 SIAM events, you will be requested to set up an account. This will allow you to share your calendar of show events across iOS and Android devices, and the HTML5 version. You can then view the schedule, browse speakers, attendees, and exhibitors, take a look at maps and building layouts, sync events with your mobile calendar, create your own show by selecting specific sessions, and more!
Pre-registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, June 2nd. Online registration form will be disconnected at 4:00 PM EDT! Register online at https://my.siam.org/conferences.aspx.
Short courses
We are very happy to announce that on Sunday June 28, the day before the conference,
nearly 20 short courses are offered on campus to conference participants in a wide range of topics
of interest to the Geosciences community: programming languages, numerical approaches, uncertainty quantification, data visualization, and more. The courses are free and accessible
to all, including students. Please register your interest for the courses at the following
website: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BQC92VS.
The exact class location of the courses will be announced mid June.
Additional low(er) Cost Accommodation
We have reserved an additional 30 beds on campus, in one of the student dorms.
These are in shared rooms (two people per room) and include a full meal plan (breakfast,
lunch and dinner). The dorm is just a few minutes away from the conference center.
Costs per person per day are $120 (which includes the meal plan).
If you are interested in this accommodation, please send an email to [email protected]
before Monday May 18.
Student Activities
If you can bring students to the conference, please do so. Apart from the short
courses on Sunday June 28, dorm accommodation and reduced student registration fees,
the conference also has several minisymposia for student speakers and a special student
poster session, both with awards.
Students interested in participating in these minisymposia and/or poster session
should send an email to [email protected] to express interest.
NEW RESULTS FOR CONTRIBUTED LECTURES AND POSTERS ARE BEING ACCEPTED THROUGH 11:59 PM EST on May 18, 2015.
Contributed presentations in lecture and poster format are invited in all areas consistent with the conference themes. To participate, each contributor must submit a title and a brief abstract not to exceed 75 words.
A lecture format is generally a 15-minute oral presentation with an additional 5 minutes for discussion. If you submit a contributed presentation in lecture format, you will run the risk of your submissions not being accepted.
A poster format involves the use of non-electronic visual aids for mounting on a poster board. As a contributed presentation in poster format, your submission would be reviewed for a poster or lecture format. Presenters who prefer a lecture format but would accept a poster or presenters who prefer a poster format should submit as a poster format. If you prefer to only present a poster, please write in the beginning on your abstract “STRICTLY POSTER PRESENTATION”.
Submissions are being accepted through 11:59 PM EST on May 18, 2015. Interested parties should submit the following information using the online submission site.
Presenting author: name, affiliation, e-mail address
Each co-author: name, affiliation, e-mail address
Poster title
Brief Abstract (75 words or less)
Note: Extended deadline is for lecture and poster submissions only. No additional minisymposia will be considered or acknowledged.
On-site conference registration and sessions will take place on the Stanford University campus. On-site registration and sessions will be located in the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center.
New: Travel Awards to the 2015 SIAM Conference on Mathematical and Computational Issues in the Geosciences (GS15) for Graduate Students from Universities in Canada.
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS, www.pims.math.ca) is sponsoring travel awards for graduate students at Canadian universities to attend the 2015 SIAM Conference on Mathematical and Computational Issues in the Geosciences (Stanford University, June 29-July 2).
The maximum amount of the award is 750 $CAD per individual and will cover the travel costs to GS15. Travel costs will be reimbursed after submission of an expense report and other relevant documents to PIMS.
In order to apply for PIMS travel award, a you must submit a CV, a letter of intent including, if relevant, the title of a presentation you will give at GS15, and a letter of recommendation from your graduate advisor. All documents must be in pdf format.
To submit an application for a PIMS travel grant to GS15, go to http://awards.siam.org/ and follow the instructions. The deadline for application is April 30, 2015. (New: THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MAY 5). Announcement of awards will be made by PIMS by May 20, 2015.
A sponsored participant will have to register for the conference (see here for the registration fees) and is responsible for making the travel and accommodation arrangements.
To RSVP to the conference on Facebook and connect with other attendees, find roommates etc., please visit https://www.facebook.com/events/649588441814679/?source=1.
If you are tweeting about the conference, please use the designated hashtag to enable other attendees to keep up with the Twitter conversation and to allow better archiving of our conference discussions. The hashtag for this meeting is #SIAMGS15.

Description
From points of view ranging from science to public policy, there is a growing interest in modeling and simulation of geosystems and their applications. Some examples include petroleum exploration and recovery, underground waste disposal and cleanup of hazardous waste, earthquake prediction, weather prediction, and global climate change. Such modeling is fundamentally interdisciplinary; physical and mathematical modeling at appropriate scales, physical experiments, mathematical theory, probability and statistics, numerical approximations, and large-scale computational algorithms all have important roles to play.
This conference facilitates communication between scientists of varying backgrounds and work environments facing similar issues in different fields, and provides a forum in which advances in parts of the larger modeling picture can become known to those working in other parts. These kinds of interactions are needed for meaningful progress in understanding and predicting complex physical phenomena in the geosciences.
Funding Agency
SIAM and the Conference Organizing Committee wish to extend their thanks and appreciation to the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy for their support of this conference.
