As you may be aware, some hotels in the city of Montreal are currently affected by an ongoing union strike. The Hyatt Regency Montreal, host hotel for the SIAM Conference on the Life Sciences, August 4-7, 2008, is one of these hotels. The strike is impacting some hotel services (outlined below) but the conference setting and services required for a successful conference should not be affected.
In the event that contract negotiations are not finalized prior to the conference dates, below is a list of affected hotel services:
- Daily housekeeping services are not available. Sleeping rooms will be refreshed between guest stays, but will not be refreshed during individual guest stays. Guests are required to call the front desk when they would like additional towels or new sheets.
- The on-site restaurant will be open for breakfast only.
- Room service is not available.
The Hyatt Regency Montreal is connected to a shopping mall that has many restaurant options, a food court and a grocery store. Hours of operation vary by vendor but range from 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Sunday hours are 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. See http://www.complexedesjardins.com/EN/ for more information.
If you are arriving at the hotel late, please be aware that there is no food service in the hotel after breakfast. A list of local restaurants within walking distance of the hotel will be available at all times at the SIAM registration desk (even after registration closes). The list will provide some information about late night dining. The SIAM registration desk will be located in the Grand Salon Foyer on Level 4.

The life sciences have become increasingly quantitative as new technologies facilitate collection and analysis of vast amounts of data ranging from complete genomic sequences of organisms to satellite imagery of forest landscapes on continental scales. As a consequence, mathematics and computational science have become crucial technologies for the study of complex models of biological processes.
The SIAM Activity Group on Life Sciences brings together researchers who seek to develop and apply mathematical and computational methods in all areas of the life sciences. This conference of the activity group will provide a cross-disciplinary forum for catalyzing mathematical research relevant to the life sciences. It will facilitate rapid diffusion of new mathematical and computational methods in the life sciences, and may stimulate more researchers to work in these important areas. Mathematicians, life scientists, computational biologists, bioengineers and others interested in mathematical and computational analysis of biological systems are encouraged to attend.
