Modelling Biological Pattern Formation: Implications of Domain Growth

One of the fundamental problems in developmental biology involves understanding the mechanisms underlying spatio-temporal patterning. Yet, only comparatively recently has it been shown that domain growth plays an important role in the patterning process. I shall consider a paradigm model for pattern formation (the well-known Turing reaction-diffusion model) and show, using numerical simulation, that domain growth can serve as a powerful pattern selection mechanism and confer robustness on certain modes of pattern.

Applications to bivalve ligament formation, pigmentation patterns in fish, and skeletal limb development, will be considered.
