Mining Scientific Data: Past, Present, and Future

The field of data mining grew out of the need of analyzing very large and complex data sets being generated in the scientific and commercial arena. This talk will focus on the advances made by our community in the context of mining scientific and engineering data sets. It will review the progress made so far, state of the art, as well as challenges for the future. A special focus will be on two domains of urgent societal interest: health and climate. We will discuss a number of applications that exemplify some of the most important questions faced by the scientists in these domains today and the role the data mining community can play in answering them.
