
The AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture
Prize Specifications
Principal GuidelinesThis lecture is to be given annually at the SIAM Annual Meeting. The lecture is intended to highlight significant contributions of women to applied or computational mathematics.
Selection Committee
The Selection Committee consists of two members of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and two members of SIAM, appointed by the presidents of these organizations. One member of the committee will be named chair of the committee, with AWM and SIAM selecting the chair in alternate years. The committee will be formed one year in advance of the date the lecture is given. The committee's term is completed when the lecturer for that year is selected.
Selection Procedures
Eligibility
The lectureship may be awarded to anyone in the scientific or engineering community whose work highlights the achievements of women in applied and computational mathematics.
Nominations
The committee may solicit nominations from members of the scientific community. Nominations will be collected by the AWM office and are due about 10 months before the date of the lecture.
Committee's Selection
The committee should complete the choice of the lecturer at least eight months before the date of the meeting. The SIAM Council and the AWM Executive Committee will be notified of the final selection. The committee's report must be accompanied by a written justification and a citation of about 100 words that can be read when the speaker is introduced.
Description of the Award
The award, consisting of a citation signed by the AWM president and the SIAM president, will be presented jointly by the presidents at the SIAM Annual Meeting.
Announcements of the award shall be placed in the AWM Newsletter and SIAM News.
Reasonable travel expenses for the lecturer to the award ceremony will be shared by AWM and SIAM. In addition, the registration fee for the meeting will be waived for the lecturer.
