Fall Meeting 2006
The Fall meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, in room 110, Maryland Hall, at Johns Hopkins University, Homewood Campus. The speaker will be Professor C. David Levermore. He will present a lecture entitled "Mathematical Challenges of Studying Complex Systems"

Climate science, economics, traffic engineering, environmental science,
and epidemiology are examples of areas that study systems so complex that
traditional notions of predictive modeling do not always apply. Because uncertainties
in the underlying models and in the data that drives them can be amplified
by a chaotic or stochastic dynamics, specific outcomes often cannot be forecast
with any certainty. This is a vastly different situation than one encounters
when, say, designing an airplane. It forces a fundamental change in how models
are used, and consequently, in how they are built and validated. This change
presents the mathematical community with challenges that go far beyond answering
traditional questions of well-posedness and approximation. This talk presents
one view of some of these challenges.
Dinner
The pre-lecture dinner will be held at Gertrude's Restaurant in the Baltimore Museum of Art, which is next to the Johns Hopkins campus. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Four entrees are available for your advance selection: Mama Lan's Five-Spice Chicken ($32.00), Top Sirloin Steak ($35.00), Gertie's Crab Cake ($33.00), and Vegetable Curry ($29.00). The pricing is inclusive of salad, entree choice, all soft beverages (sodas, coffee, tea, etc.), tax and gratuity.
To attend the dinner, please send your entree choice along with a check
for the appropriate amount made out to SIAM Washington-Baltimore Section
early enough to be received by Friday, November 10, to our Secretary-Treasurer,
Ioannis Konstantinidis, at 808 Kennebec Ave #4, Takoma Park, MD 20912. If
you cannot get your check to him by that date and you still want to come
to dinner, then please call him by Friday, November 10, at 301-405-5158.
Gertrude's can accommodate at most twenty-five diners on this occasion, so
be sure to reserve in advance.
Directions and Parking
The Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University is in Baltimore near 33rd and Charles Streets. Gertrude's Restaurant is in the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), which is next to the campus. The lecture will be held in Maryland Hall, room 110, on the campus. You may park in the metered lot near the museum.
Please be aware that new construction has begun on the south end of campus and the visitor parking lot has changed. You can access the new parking information at: http://www.parking.jhu.edu/
If coming into Baltimore from the north on I-83, come down I-83 and get off onto 28th Street. Go to the traffic light at Howard Street and turn left. After you pass 29th Street, bear around to the right onto Art Museum Drive. The Baltimore Museum of Art will be on your left. At the far end of the museum turn left into the parking lot and park at one of the meters. (You will need $2.25 in quarters to park for the evening.)
If coming from Delaware, come down I-95 and get on I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) toward Towson. From I-695 get on I-83 south and follow the directions from I-83. Get off I-83 at 28th Street and follow the directions above to the BMA.
If coming from Washington, you may come on either I-95 or the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. If coming on the Parkway, follow it to the end and you'll be on Russell Street. If coming on I-95, take the Russell Street exit. On Russell Street go over the bridge, exit into the right lane, and follow the signs onto Martin Luther King Boulevard. On Martin Luther King Boulevard go past U.S. 40; get into the center lane. After passing Druid Hill Avenue stay in your lane and bear left onto Howard Street. Go past North Avenue and continue until you pass 29th Street. Bear right onto Art Museum Drive and look for the art museum on your left. Park in the metered area near the far end of the museum. (You will need $2.25 in quarters for parking.)
If you are coming for the meeting only (not the dinner), you may go directly to room Maryland 110. You may park at the art museum (as above) and walk from there to Maryland Hall, room 110. You will need $2.25 in quarters for parking.
