Agencies and Programs

Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The Directorate of Mathematics and Space Sciences is responsible for basic research in mathematical and computer sciences and space, including the following areas: dynamics and control, physical mathematics and applied analysis, computational analysis, aerodynamics and hypersonics, optimization and discrete mathematics, software and systems, electromagnetics, and signal processing.

Army Research Office. The Mathematical and Computer Sciences Division has programs in Applied Analysis; Numerical Methods and Optimization; Stochastic Analysis, Applied Probability, and Statistics; Systems and Control; Software and Knowledge-Based Systems; and Discrete Mathematics and Computer Science. Some of these programs have moved to the Computer & Information Sciences Division which includes Applied Analysis; Systems and Control; Software & Knowledge-Based Systems; Information Assurance; Information &Networks.

Office of Naval Research. The Mathematical, Computer, and Information Sciences Division covers basic and applied research in: Applied Analysis, Autonomous Systems, Command and Control, Intelligent Systems, Numerical Analysis, Operations Research, Probability and Statistics, Software and Computer Systems, and Visualization and Computer Graphics.

The National Science Foundation serves the breadth of basic research in science and engineering. The Division of Mathematical Science (DMS) is responsible for mathematics and statistics, including applied and computational mathematics. The Directorate for Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering (CISE) contains program in theoretical computer science, advanced computational research, and visualization.

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science oversees science programs in the national laboratories as well as extramural (university) research programs. Advanced Scientific Computing Research has major programs in applied mathematics, computing, and computational science and engineering. The Advanced Scientific Computing Research program contains mathematics, information, and computational sciences (MICS).
