Instructions for Authors
Note regarding SIAM's macros: Authors are highly encouraged to prepare their papers using SIAM's multimedia LaTeX 2e macros. Although doing so is optional, using the SIAM macros enables features that will aid editors and referees during review as well as reducing the time needed to process a paper after acceptance. If an author chooses not to use the SIAM macros, the SIAM office will reformat Plain TeX and AMSTeX files to use SIAM's multimedia LaTeX 2e macros after the paper has been accepted for publication. The SIAM multimedia LaTeX 2e macro package and documentation are available here or by email request to [email protected].
Submitting a Manuscript
Submissions to the all-electronic SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences (SIIMS) must be in electronic form. Hard-copy submissions will not be considered. Please enter submissions directly into the Journal Submission & Tracking System at http://siims.siam.org. Authors should submit both the manuscript and a cover letter in PDF format. Figures, if any, must be embedded in the manuscript, with the exception of the supplementary material. The core paper should not exceed 5 megabytes.
Supplementary material can be in one of the following formats:
- PDF for additional text and figures, where as with the core paper submission, the supplementary figures are embedded in this supplementary file. Only one additional PDF file can be used for all supplementary text and figures.
- PowerPoint (PPT) or PDF presentation which covers the material in the core paper, plus parts of the supplementary text, figures, and videos/animations. Only one PPT/PDF file for the presentation material can be included with the supplementary material. The author should verify that all multimedia material is embedded in the file. The submission of PPT presentations will also help readers to use the material in their lectures, further promoting the paper innovations.
- Movies and animations in AVI, MPEG, or animated GIF format.
- One single ZIP or RAR file including all material needed for reproducing the results reported in the paper, for example, original images and or videos. Original code developed by the authors can be included in this file as well.
Authors are required to submit an index of Supplementary Materials. In the index, list each item along with a brief description and a justification for why the item should be included. This index will be used by the editor and referees in judging the appropriateness, and the descriptions will also ultimately appear on the Supplementary Materials webpage available to readers. This html template should be used to create the index (right click and "save link or target as" to download: also available as a text file). See Supplementary Materials for more information.
SIIMS encourages authors to also submit, at the time of their SIIMS submission, a detailed algorithm description and companion software to Image Processing On Line (IPOL, http://www.ipol.im/). IPOL is a peer-reviewed electronic journal of image processing and image analysis algorithms, and a repository of image processing workshops. A companion publication would increase the visibility of the work and the potential for collaboration
Reviews for SIIMS and IPOL are separate and independent, and acceptance/rejection of the submission to one journal is not dependent in any form on either the submission to or acceptance/rejection by the other. Upon acceptance by both, cross links between these fully electronic journals will be created so readers will be able to easily navigate between the SIIMS and IPOL complementary materials.

Submission of a manuscript to SIIMS is representation by the author that the manuscript has not been published or submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. If the paper appeared in a preliminary form in a conference proceedings, this must be clearly indicated in both your cover letter and in a footnote on the title page of your manuscript. The cover letter should detail the differences with the conference paper. A copy of the conference paper/s must be submitted with the manuscript as well.
To assist referees, copies of unpublished references should also be submitted with an indication of whether they have been accepted for publication.
Authors may suggest an editor from among those listed on the journal's masthead, but the Editor-in-Chief has the exclusive right to assign papers to members of the editorial board. The editors reserve the right to reject any manuscript that is not completely legible or does not conform to the journal's standards. Authors should retain copies of all manuscripts.
NOTE: If your paper contains material (for example, tables or figures) from another source, that material must be accompanied by written permission from the copyright holder. Permission is needed in cases of alternations to the original, as well.
Survey articles: SIIMS welcomes survey articles that convey the essential information in a subfield to a broad imaging sciences audience and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration. Surveys should be pedagogical and use limited jargon. They should provide the essence of each type of approach in the subfield and explain the most important current issues, challenges and opportunities.
Style of articles: Articles for SIIMS should be written to be accessible to a broad imaging sciences audience. All non-survey papers must contain substantially new results. A good balance of mathematics and applications is expected. All papers should have carefully written introduction and conclusion sections, which summarize and explain the results comprehensively to readers in the imaging sciences. Furthermore, the scientific importance of the paper and its conclusion should be made clear.
Original scholarship: A large duplication of another author's or one's own work is a sign of poor scholarship. There is also a copyright issue if the source is not cited. Your manuscript should provide proper citations, use quotation marks or indentation (for quotations of five or more lines) to indicate borrowed wording, and minimize duplication. Refusal by an author to make these necessary changes is grounds for rejection.
Potentially Offensive Material: There is no general rule on what material is appropriate for publication in SIAM Publications. However, if a handling editor believes that the use of some material (text, images, etc.) may offend SIAM readers, the publication reverts to the editor-in-chief who will engage in an exchange with the authors on the need for the particular material and whether alternatives can be identified to express the same results. Unless the authors can make convincing arguments that the particular material is essential to convey the scientific contribution, it is expected that the material be replaced prior to review and further consideration for publication.
Resubmission: A resubmission of a manuscript previously rejected by this or another SIAM journal will be treated as a new submission, with the history of the manuscript made available to the handling editor and, if necessary, also referees. The cover letter should include the criticism in the referee reports and a detailed description of how the manuscript has been revised to meet all the criticism of the original submission. As a new submission, there is no guarantee that it will be handled by the same associate editor or that the original referees will be involved in the evaluation.
ORCID: SIAM is a member of ORCID - https://orcid.org/ - a central registry of researchers. Authors submitting papers to SIAM journals can log in to the submission system (https://siims.siam.org) through their ORCID account, or can go to their SIAM system profile to connect their ORCID to their SIAM journals work. If the paper is accepted and published, SIAM Journals Online will display an icon next to the author’s name which links to their ORCID page, which can in turn list their published article if the author chooses.
SIAM encourages authors to take advantage of ORCID’s capability, which can be viewed as a DOI for an individual. Wherever it is used, this unique identifier then pulls together the individual’s work and professional activities from across publications, disciplines and workplaces. The researcher controls, through his or her ORCID account, which work and activities are publicly displayed.

TEX papers: Authors of accepted papers are encouraged to submit their TEX files to SIAM for typesetting. (SIAM cannot accept electronic files for papers produced on any other typesetting or word processing system.) More detailed information on SIAM's TeX-typesetting procedures is sent to authors upon receipt of manuscript submissions.
Illustrations: All illustrations must be of professional quality with no handwritten elements. Note that tables and algorithms are not considered figures and should not be treated as such. Illustrations must be numbered consecutively and cited in the text. If your article is accepted for publication, SIAM will accept electronic (TeX, PDF, PNG, JPG, and EPS) figure files. Hand-drawn artwork will not be accepted. SIAM will not redraw figures. Illustrations must use lines 1 point or thicker; thinner lines may break up or disappear when printed. When choosing line weight and character size, keep in mind that illustrations may be reduced.
Color: Being this an all-electronic publication, the use of color or any other multimedia material enhancing the core paper and the supplementary material is encouraged. Color will appear in the all-electronic publication at no cost to the authors.
Supplementary material: As detailed above, authors will have the possibility to add, at no cost, supplementary material in the all-electronic journal (up to 50 megabytes per paper). This includes videos, additional examples, a PPT presentation, data, code, and appendixes with additional theory. Follow the instructions above for this supplementary material. The core paper though should be self contained and readable without the supplementary material. The core paper will point and/or hyperlink to the supplementary material as needed and found appropriate. The supplementary material will be reviewed as well by the referees.
Title: Titles should be brief and appropriate for indexing and should specifically describe the content of the paper.
Abstract: An abstract not exceeding 250 words that summarizes the principal techniques and conclusions of the manuscript in relation to known results must accompany each manuscript. Because the abstract must be able to stand independently, mathematical formulas and bibliographic references should be kept to a minimum; bibliographic references must be written out in full (not given by number).
Key words: Lists of key words must accompany all articles.
AMS subject classifications: AMS subject classifications are encouraged for those articles that are more mathematical in nature. The subject classifications are listed in the Annual Index of Mathematical Reviews and can be accessed or searched online at http://www.ams.org/msc/.
Abbreviated title: An abbreviated title, which will be used as a running head, must accompany all articles, must not consist of more than 50 characters (including spaces), and must not contain abbreviations.
References: References should be listed in either alphabetical order or order of citation at the end of the manuscript. The following reference styles should be used:

Citations within the text: A consistent style should be used, and the style of in-text citations should conform to the reference style chosen. To refer to a specific page or item in an article or book the following formats may be used: [2, p. 51]; [M, p. 51]; Mandelbrot [2, p. 51]; or Mandelbrot (1977, p. 51).
Page limit policy: Although the journal has no formal limits on manuscript length, papers exceeding 30 journal pages, excluding the supplementary material, will be reviewed more closely to ensure that the excess is fully justified. The publication of papers exceeding 30 pages (excluding the supplementary material) will be evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief and the member of the Editorial Board handling the paper, with input from the anonymous reviewers. Authors must submit their paper already in the corresponding SIIMS format in order to assess their length.
