Industrial and Applied Mathematics in The Pharmaceutical Industry

It still comes as a surprise to many that applied mathematics plays a role in the development of new compounds and biologics. Even those "in the know" about the use of statistics in experimental design and clinical development are missing many novel activities in basic and preclinical research. In this presentation we survey some of these activities including image processing and the modeling of antivirals. In the area of image processing we examine the registration problem. The creation of a one-to-one and onto mapping between similar images leads to useful and efficient methods for finding biomarkers. Effective antiviral models can often accelerate the development of compounds but may also provide insight into processes that are not measurable with today's assay technologies.
