October 8, 2015: Minisymposium proposal submissions
December 15, 2015 extended to December 30, 2015: Contributed Lecture, Poster and Minisymposium Presentation Abstracts
How to Participate
SIAM requests that individuals limit themselves to giving one talk. (This does not apply to invited plenary speakers). The co-chairs of the organizing committee may make exceptions to this request.
You are invited to contribute a presentation for this conference in one of the following formats.
Minisymposia
A minisymposium consists of 2-5 sessions of four 25-minute presentations, with an additional five minutes for discussion after each presentation. Prospective minisymposium organizers are asked to submit a proposal consisting of a title, a description (not to exceed 100 words), and a list of lecturers invited to participate and titles of their presentations using the Conference Management System at: http://meetings.siam.org/start.cfm?CONFCODE=ms16.
NOTE: Minisymposia will have a different format this year. Each minisymposium will include lecturers invited to participate and lectures from contributed submissions. Minisymposium organizers should fill not more than 75% of the lecture slots with lecturers invited to participate, reserving at least 25% of the lecture slots for contributed submissions. Contributed submissions will be solicited after the minisymposia are approved. Minisymposium organizers will be given the list of all contributed submissions to decide which to include in their minisymspoisum for oral presentation, which to be recommended for posters, and which to be rejected. When submitting your sessions as an organizer, you will need to add a placeholder in each session to represent the contributed submission that will be added at a later date. For every session with three talks, please add one placeholder. If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Erle ([email protected]).
For example
Title: Contributed talk #1 or something like that
Name: TBD, TBD1
Email address: [email protected]
Title: Contributed talk #2 or something like that
Name: TBD, TBD2
Email address: [email protected]
It is strongly recommended that minisymposium co-organizers not all represent the same organization. To ensure balance, SIAM prefers that a single individual not be an organizer of more than one minisymposium. The Organizing Committee will referee minisymposium proposals. The number of minisymposia may be limited to retain an acceptable level of parallelism in the conference sessions.
The Organizing Committee insists that the lecturers invited to participate in each minisymposium represent a diversity of organizations. Lecturers invited to participate and contributed submissions in each minisymposium should be interspersed throughout the program. Each minisymposium lecturers invited to participate should submit a 75-word abstract.
Be certain to visit http://www.siam.org/meetings/guidelines/mini_guide.php to review Guidelines for Preparing a Minisymposium Proposal.
Deadline for submission of minisymposium proposals: October 8, 2015
Deadline for submission of minisymposium speaker abstracts: December 15, 2015 extended to December 30, 2015
Guidelines for Preparing a Minisymposium Proposal

- Preparation of the Proposal
What is a Minisymposium?
A minisymposium is a set of 2-5 sessions on a single topic of substantial current interest in the mathematical and computational aspects of the science and engineering of materials. Each session generally includes four coordinated presentations over two hours. Generally, each speaker has twenty-five minutes for presentation, with an additional five minutes for discussion.
In conducting the minisymposium, the session organizer should provide an overview of the minisymposium, introduce the lecturers, and provide an opportunity for discussion among the speakers and the audience. The organizer may also be one of the speakers.
Organizing a Minisymposium
Those interested in organizing a minisymposium should submit a proposal to the conference program committee by no later than the due date listed on the form. Organizers will select the topics to be addressed, obtain speakers for those topics, decide with each speaker on the title of his/her presentation, and provide other information as needed.
SIAM and the conference organizing committee will not be able to waive the registration fee for minisymposium organizers and speakers, or reimburse their expenses. Therefore, organizers should make no financial commitments on behalf of SIAM to speakers when organizing their minisymposium.
Prospective minisymposium organizers should seriously consider the following recommendations when selecting Invited Lecturers in a minisymposium.
- Speakers should be selected primarily for their current contributions to the topic area.
- Speakers should be as representative of researchers in the area as is practical.
- Minisymposium organizers should select the first speaker based on one who can provide an overview of the topic area, put the whole area in perspective, particularly with regard to applications, and suggest new venues for continued research and application. A minisymposium organizer may speak in the minisymposium he or she is organizing.
- Minisymposium organizers are encouraged to include women and members of underrepresented minorities as speakers whenever appropriate.
- SIAM discourages minisymposia in which most of the speakers come from the same organization or if all co-authors on the papers being presented in a minisymposium are from the same organization.
Preparation of the Proposal
The Minisymposium Organizer should provide the following information:
- Title: Describe the subject of your minisymposium as accurately and specifically as possible in not more than ten words.
- Organizer: Provide your full name, title, affiliation, address, telephone number, and, when available, fax number and e-mail address.
- Summary: Describe your minisymposium in not more than 100 words. The summary should be written to attract those who specifically work on your topic as well as those who work in related areas.
Based on experience, we suggest the following outline:
- Explain the problem area to be addressed by the speakers and why it is important in significant applications.
- Identify current directions of research and methods being developed to solve problems, including their advantages and shortcomings.
- Describe the scope of your minisymposium.
Lecturers invited to participate

The CMS will re-open for updates after the program schedule is complete.
Contributed submissions in lecture and poster formats are invited in all areas consistent with the conference themes.
